An Urban Voice and Beyond.

I’m Carl S. Taylor, Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Michigan State University, but my story goes far beyond academia. As a writer, podcaster, and artist, I’m passionate about using my voice and creativity to connect people, spark deep conversations, and challenge societal norms. I was born and raised in Detroit and while the city has shaped who I am, my work is representative of real-world experience, raw authenticity, and a constant drive for change.

A Scholar with Real-world Impact

My academic career has been centered on exploring the complexities of societal communities, gang culture, and social justice. Over the years, I’ve received numerous accolades for my research, but what truly drives me is using my knowledge to impact the world beyond the classroom. My work isn’t just about theory—it’s about understanding and engaging with the people and communities I study. This blend of academic expertise and practical experience allows me to offer a unique perspective on the issues that matter most.

A Creator with a Mission

Beyond my academic pursuits, I am committed to using creativity as a tool for change. Through my essays, books, podcasts, and artwork, I strive to create content that inspires and engages. Each project is an opportunity to open minds, foster connections, and encourage action. I want my work to inform policy and spark conversations that matter—conversations that challenge how we see the world and each other.

Honoring a Legacy of Excellence

My commitment  has been recognized with numerous accolades throughout my career:

  • Awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from Michigan State University for contributions
  • Awarded multiple honors for outstanding contributions to sociology, human ecology, and human development
  • Acknowledged as a thought leader in youth development and culture, international community studies, gang culture, and social justice.

“The D.O.G.”

“The D.O.G.” is not a personal term. Its definition is broad and thematic. “The D.O.G.” reflects both my deep connection to the city and my commitment to authenticity. My work is an expression of my roots and my belief in the power of storytelling to create understanding and bring about change.

Join me on this journey—where culture, creativity, and connection come together in ways that spark reflection and inspire action.
